And I'm now running a 3.12 kernel.  I was holding back on upgrading because I
was having boot problems with the 3.12 kernel.  But that turned out to be a
hardware problem: bad memory!  Now that the bad memory is gone, 3.12 boots fine.
And I can confirm that sysfs does get updated properly on the stock Debian 3.12
kernel.
