That's an uninformed opinion. The need for mplayer is to *download* files
that are not downloadable via simple HTTP. In particular:

* rtmpdump is used to download via the RTMP protocol.
* mplayer is used to download via the MMS or RTSP protocols.

It is not a frivolous recommendation of a player for videos; instead, it is
a way to perform essential parts of actually downloading videos.

Read what I wrote above before claiming that "does not add any
functionality".

In general, I would trust a maintainer of a package to know what piece of
software he is maintaining. Especially when said maintainer is also involved
in upstream development.
