Smarthost requires STARTTLS and PLAIN login -- therefore the
connection is authenticated. A default install refuses to authenticate:

If I add ``AUTH_CLIENT_ALLOW_NOTLS_PASSWORDS = true'' to the exim
configuration, everything works fine:
