This is really pedantic. :) There is nothing wrong with this check. Lintian uses man output to check for hyphens. I had reproducible case where I could see hyphens outside of lintian and escaping exactly one minus after space was enough to see the problem gone even if second minus was left un-escaped. There were never dash following minus in man pages even if only first minus after space was escaped.
Although documentation can always be improved I doubt if there will be any reason to mention that "this check is correct". We assume all checks to be correct -- otherwise we report bugs. :) I recommend to close this "bug" right away. I didn't do it myself merely to leave room for second opinion.
