Well, it certainly took longer than a weekend :) But winter break is here and I can now spend some time hacking away at this. I've had some progress debugging the problem. I'm still working on it, but it looks like there is a tty sitting somewhere that is trigging the user activity detection. I'm working on getting it to report what tty precisely is the culprit.
