On my up-to-date wheezy system, with Thunderbird 24.1.0 installed locally, clicking a link in email launches a new, blank, browser window. The hyperlink is not reached automatically. Prior to Thunderbird version 24, clicking on email links correctly opened URLs in a new tab in the existing browser window. This worked out-of-the box.
