I can't reproduce this and the way it was originally reported does not
make sense.  You said that the error given was no medium found, but
that strace showed it printing a message that only root can mount
that.  Which is it?

If you still get an error that only root can mount that, please show
the /etc/fstab line, the exact mount command used and its output, and
dmesg | tail.
