As already mentioned by Antonio, I also suspect this is not an issue of changes within color.c and pattern.c. However, $thorough_search defaults to yes from version 1.5.21 on: http://www.mutt.org/doc/devel/UPDATING Thus, I can reproduce your expected AND your encountered behaviour of mutt by toggeling $thorough_search to no, and yes respectively. (Independent of $thorough_search - I think adding "!~G" to your color patterns causes your expected behaviour, too.) I suggest this is not a bug, but a configuration change within mutt.
