Do you observe this on a single machine or via a network? I suggest editing your nodes list to identify the hosts that make problems. I also experienced the freeze for heterogeneous setups of 1.4 and 1.6 versions. In a homogeneous setup, the direct execution e.g. of "hostname" always works. But there is something that I have done to a prior working homogeneous 1.6 setup across three nodes that now freezes when I execute GROMACS' mdrun, if a single particular node is allowed to contribute.
