Could you put that ramdisk online somewhere? I'd like to analyze it. Also include the config files used when generating the image. And the commandline used when booting. Ohh, and how did you serve the ramdisk? My success was using a patched GRUB[1]. Perhaps whatever method you use does not support cpio images?
