I rebuilt my root array with a modern superblock and now grub handles it just fine. This problem is most likely specific to the old v0.90 layout. So it's still a bug in grub but I can't help test any fixes anymore. However, this does provide a (painful) way forward for people hitting the bug -- rebuild your root array with a v1.x format...
