I think this is most likely a bug and a regression in freeglut3, version 2.8.1. I have forwarded this bug report to freeglut's upstream bug tracker at sourceforge.net. https://sourceforge.net/p/freeglut/bugs/201/ I think the way how billard-gl calls "exit" is correct and there is not much what we can do here to improve the situation.
