Dan,
Thanks for confirming what I saw in Sernet's 4.0.7. I was finally able
to get some parts partially working; getent group never worked.

Hi Dale
unfortunately the bug is also present in version 4.0.x. I just
compiled from source samba version 4.0.7 which is the latest version.
I will try to raise another bug for version 4.
regards,
dan

Dant,
I thought you might like to see the opinion of a Debian maintainer
after I reported this bug to them. Officially it's Debian bug 715406.
He's not optimistic that upstream will patch this in 3.6.x.
As Debian doesn't have a viable Samba4, I plan to give 4.0.x from
Sernet a try for testing this.

OK, so let's link bugs

if W2K auth is now deprecated, but, so far, none of the devs have responded.

bug or its status?
Not more than what you point. I subscribed to this bug report but
that's about all what I can do. Your hope is that the bug is also in
4.0.x because I doubt upstream Samba developers really take care of
the bug if it only applies to 3.6....
