I've since swapped out that printer, installed gimp-print and gimp-svg. This new Epson configures correctly with foomatic-gui and works. gutenprint.ijs (?) is the recommended driver, and works. Bug closed? -- Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced.
