I have also had this problem. I was making LaTeX documents with a lot of EPS graphics in it, converted from bitmaps by both GIMP and XSane (both generated totally different looking PostScript). When converting the DVI file to PDF with dvipdfm (which uses gs to convert the images), I had a problem. The resulting PDF file would view fine with gpdf and xpdf, but not with Adobe's Acrobat Reader. When converting the file to PostScript with dvips, the PostScript appeared just fine and was printable by a PostScript printer. However, any conversion to PDF which uses gs (so, also ps2pdf) gave me a PDF file which could not be viewed with Acrobat Reader. Also printing it to the same PostScript printer gave errors, even from gpdf/xpdf. Strangely enough, the problem did not occur for all images. All problems disappeared when using gs-gpl or gs-afpl.
