The output Joey cites is awkward, I agree with him. But IMHO this is not the 
main issue here.

The default behaviour of GNU parallel in Debian diverts from all introductory 
documentation available. The config that is included in Debian just cost me an 
hour figuring out why parallel did not work for me as intended by its author.

If one chooses to install GNU parallel one expects it to behave like GNU 
parallel. Please remove the option in /etc/parallel/config or maybe add a 
debconf question about this as a compromise (with --gnu as default).
