The new upstream release 0.9.0 now contains a log configuration option that can be used to log messages at debug level to either syslog or a simple file (without passing the -d switch). This should cover most debugging scenario's I think. A release of a Debian package of the 0.9 series will probably have to wait until after wheezy is released because experimental is currently used for the 0.8 series and I prefer to avoid uploading newer versions to unstable.
