interestingly enough, i did an upgrade to wheezy (although i don't see
it after the crawl install, according to /var/logs), then touched the
game some time later, and it worked without any other obvious effort. i
don't know if the upgrade is what fixed the game, but the screen doesn't
black out, even though i didn't touch or create .crawlrc.

well, i hope the bug is fixed for any other people too.

my laptop is a Thinkpad Edge 13" 0578-N6U, with a core i3 390M

in order to install an atheros wifi card, i had to install a modded bios
to remove the whitelist, about 2 years ago.
