To answer the remaining questions: 1. the POP3 server needs to byte-stuff (prepend another dot to lines starting with a dot)
2. the POP3 clients needs to undo the byte-stuffing (fetchmail's part) 3. an SMTP client needs to byte-stuff (also fetchmail's part) HTH.
