O.K, I might only get back at this if I'm looking for some further debugging joys... I thought there must be also something different in the openafs packaging between 1.4 and 1.6 as the former builds fine with make-kpkg. > I recommend switching to DKMS. Just, it's not giving us a deb that we can use in automated mass-deployment as we intend to do :) So I'm trying m-a and see how this works, next option might be to to patch a vanilla kernel and use it's deb-pkg build target. I just wonder if that will work well with the rest of the openafs tools packaged for wheezy (assuming I take care to use the same upstream version).
