Due to a hardware failure I had to replace the 640U with another model.
Ok, I think it's fair to close the bug report in Debian then. According
to the SANE project website [1], this scanner has complete support in
SANE and should therefore work.
If anyone should experience problems with this scanner again, they are
encouraged to re-open this bug report or file a new one.
