Ugh. POSIX says it must be a long, but in practice I’ve
found out it actually needs to be a time_t since that
can be larger than long… which, in turn, needs patches
to lots of software.

But int vs. long doesn’t make any difference for you, so…

(I’d probably just have added -fwrapv to EXTRA_CFLAGS in
debian/rules in cvs…)
