I don't think it is safe to automatically remove the existing group.
So I don't plan to do that in the package.

upgrade (or when they're removed).
Ideally, after an upgrade things should be identical to when one would
have installed a fresh version.
Otherwise one collects over time an ever growing heap of crap (which is
like what windows does).

I have no idea what else the pcscd group has been used for on your system. Only
the administrator knows that.
Maybe you have set some files to the group pcscd. If my script removes the
pcscd group then the files will belong to an unknown group.
Later another Debian package may create a group and reuse the same group id as
the old pcscd and your files belonging to the group pcscd will now belong to
the newnly created group. That is not what you want.
In doubt I prefer a safe solution.
