        I just blundered into this bug and had a thought about this error 
message. It 
looks weird because everything is running as root in the initrd boot 
sequence.

...except with NFS root doesn't get root access to remote files unless the 
server is set to allow it. If the NFS server has the default mapping of root 
=> nobody the mount may fail if mount checks for writeability of the 
directory or something.

So the question is: Have you checked that you have "no_root_squash" in the 
options for the root file system in /etc/exports on the NFS server?

Also you may have to mount the NFS root filesystem rw rather than ro.
