Brian, OdyX-- Thanks for your help, the printer got better. Sadly, I don't know exactly what changed, so I can't document what fixed the problem.
One thing that may have poked things into success is I pm-suspend my machine every night. That may have disturbed some software package in the right direction. I'll contend that there is still a problem here, the printer should have self installed. In the span of 3 days I installed wheezy (printer didn't work), installed squeeze (printer worked), installed wheezy (printer didn't work). I do know the "waiting for printer to become available" was resolved when I power cycled the printer. I'd unplugged/replugged the USB cable and didn't see anything show up in dmesg. I also plugged into a different USB port and didn't see that in dmesg either. I'm guessing the printer got into some oddball state. I suspect this "waiting" problem is separate from the self installation problem. Regardless, I appreciate the help and direction.
