Hi!
I've experienced strong instability with the official package.
When I saw that they where important patches, such as the 'optimized
hash', I decided to recompile an orig release from upstream, and the
instability just did not reappear..
I feel it important that a debian package is far less stable than
upstream original application: it will lead to many many false bug
report to upstream, and dismiss a lot of potential users..
Then I would recommend that at first the name of top windows would
mention the debian custom release like valknut 0.3.7 debian.
Also, there is an auto feed to upstream when the application crashes,
and you should make sure that upstream is able to seperate from debian
or non debian patched package, or even disable it. See cdrecord for
instance:

But, it seems that the good behaviour for such important patch would be
to submit it upstream and wait until it has been tested before applying
it to the application..
