Hi,

Considering that mailbox auto detection is not always working, I
recommend to just add a big NEWS entry telling people to manually set
the 'mail_location' parameter in /etc/dovecot/local.conf.

I will add some info about /etc/dovecot/local.conf in NEWS but that is not the answer. mail_location should have been included all along and that it wasn't was a flaw which is now fixed and will not be repeated.

I've always set this parameter manually, but after reading how much
problems it could cause I prefer to keep it in /etc/dovecot/local.conf
to avoid it from being replaced on upgrades. Of course, the default
config *must* not set this parameter (leave it as an example).

It has to be set to something to make the package plug-and-play for new users. Part of the problem is that I am trying to satisfy novice and advanced users at the same time.

I just upgraded my Wheezy installation, which upgraded both dovecot-core
and dovecot-imapd from 1:2.1.7-2 to 1:2.1.7-6, and after the upgrade I
could also no longer access my mailboxes.

The change Jerry Quinn mentioned fixed it for me again, but Wheezy has
been frozen for quite a while now. I didn't expect a (supposed) bugfix
upgrade of Dovecot to completely break mail access on my system.

I realize this is of little comfort but the bug was that mail_location was not set. That it worked anyway was a coincidence. Please be assured I am not trying to break your mail on purpose!
