Dear Maintainer,
I was bitten by the same bug. I'm certainly not an *advanced* user of
dovecot. When I first set up dovecot it worked perfectly for me out of the
box. I had no idea where to look without seeing the original reporter's
workaround.
I think this really needs a script to detect that a system is using the
deprecated setting and needs to be updated. If I'd been alerted during the
upgrade, I could have handled it manually if I had to rather than worrying
that dovecot (or something worse) ate my mail.
