In what way does this cripple the flexibility of the base system? This is a lot of hyperbole. No software is forced to use XDG_RUNTIME_DIR if it doesn't want to, i.e. it doesn't fit their needs. I no way is this somehow crippling other parts of the base system. -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth?
