This is just a follow-up to my previous message.
The message I get on the console when the system finishes booting but
fails to switch to GDM is as follows:
startpar: service(s) returned failure: plymouth ...Failed!
I hope this may be helpful.
Something else I noticed, if I uninstall Plymouth, but do not update the
initramfs file afterward, the splash screen is still displayed, GDM has
no problem loading afterward, and GDM also seems to be able to grab the
last frame from the boot splash to fade in from (something that having
Plymouth actually installed seemed to have broken when switching from
Plymouth to GDM 3.4 previously). I don't know if this might be relevant
or helpful information but it was something interesting I noticed...
