Hi Ben, The error was evident in both kernels - I upgraded and it was still there.
The sata_svw has an ST3750640AS and WDC WD20EARS-00M attached. The promise card has a WDC WD20EARS-00M attached. Drives working with the promise card were Seagate ST3250820AS and WD2500JS-40NGB2. /var/log/dmesg with NODEV message ([3.75..]) attached.
