 Ok, it's unclear what happens, and could be due to a lot of various
 reasons.

 However, from a high-level point of view, if you're under Xfree and
 Ctrl Alt Backspace doesn't work anymore, that probably means:
 - your xfree crashed / had a bug
 - OR your kernel had a bug / crashed

 You can check whether your kernel is still alive by isntalling a SSH
 server and logging to your machine from the network for example.

 At all rates, install the latest kernel (2.6.12) and Xorg, and try
 again.  If it doesn't solve your problem, then I'll reassign to the
 kernel or to Xorg.

I had planed to install Xorg instead XFree this week-end, but just before doing it, I just tried once to launch gedit by su... and it works now.
I only have updated my system through synaptic form beginning of this week.
