Did you pay attention that java-package only supports tar.gz binary distributions ? I just tested it on wheezy as well :
> make-jpkg jdk-7u6-linux-x64.tar.gz ... The Debian package has been created in the current directory. You can install the package as root (e.g. dpkg -i oracle-j2sdk1.7_1.7.0+update6_amd64.deb). > Please attach the full command and output if you still encounter this problem. -- Cédric
