I managed a work around for my instance of this problem.

It seems I changed the permissions  of all files in my 'Pictures'
folder to '777' after I had earlier set the permissions to read only.
Shotwell does not like this. After I changed the permissions back to
'755' Shotwell no longer crashed.

Shotwell should be able to handle different file permissions.
Additionally, when encountering unexpected file permissions the user
should be warned and Shotwell should continue to function, possibly
with limited functionality.
