Hm, I just installed luatex and texlive-base in a chroot and get: root@riesling:/# kpsewhich --var-value=OSFONTSDIR root@riesling:/# Also, root@riesling:/# grep OSFONTSDIR /etc/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf root@riesling:/# Is this different on your system?
