Package: dpkg
Version: 1.16.7
Severity: wishlist

Hi.

One main reason that keeps me (and I guess other people) from
using dpkg-statoverride is, that one doesn't notice when the
"original" values change in the package...

As one continues to override them with the own settings one may
even run into security troubles (imagine the package changed
they way it uses a file, other permission/owners could easly be
dangerous).

Obviously one cannot fully avoid this, but it would be nice,
and help already a bit, if one could only override some of
user/group/mode.

E.g. change the user, change the mode, but leave the group.
Or for me the most common use case would be, leave mode alone, change the group
and sometimes, change the user, too.

Obviously one could make this very mighty, e.g. allow chmod style
mode specifications that add/erase only some flags, e.g.
u+w,o+r but leave all others as they are.

Oviously this is also touched by my wishlist bug #682289
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=682289).

Cheers,
Chris.
