I think you will find the root-plugin-montecarlo-pythia8 package useful :-) The pythia8-root-interface package provides interfaces to call ROOT functions in Pythia8 code, not to call Pythia8 functions in ROOT interactive sessions -- root-plugin-montecarlo-pythia8 package does that work, but the package is not available on Ubuntu right now.
