I have the same problem. Personally I manage it by "enhancing" the function I am minimizing/maximizing with a bundle of *if(;;)statements. This also proves to be more flexible method than using solver dialog, even if it does work :) But for me it does not. Nevertheless, I like Gnumeric Solver very much. As of my experience, OOo solver failed for difficult tasks not only once, whereas Gnumeric's one did not.
