It's not erroneous, because as it is currently packaged for Debian, the maintainer scripts need to know each emacsen flavor they should check for. I think, however, that a more automatic packaging would be nice. And I think current upstream auctex does find all emacsen in the path. Maybe you can just use this mechanism, Davide?
