Hm. I’ve not experienced this on my systems (amd64 and m68k),
tracking sid. (But then, I usually purge aptitude first thing.)
And, to be honest, I’d not care about this if it doesn’t affect
squeeze → wheezy updates, either.

This adds an ugly complexity I thought you were trying to avoid…
and I don’t personally believe it necessary, but let’s see what
the actual problems were.
