No, I think it does not deserve an #ifdef.

For the Debian side, this bugreport documents the problem and provides the fix.
I will also add a note inside the package NEWS file time permitting. 

I think you should just fix the examples, and maybe add a note in the 
changelog/readme, so that if one hits the problem and looks at the
project homepage he finds the fix as well.
