You recommend xterm | x-terminal-emulator.  If you choose invoke xterm,
you could change this recommendation.

I have neither xterm nor any other x-terminal-emulator installed.

If you use execve() or similar, checking if the function it returns (on
success it does not) and if it does, displaying an error message that
matches errno in packagesearch itself would in my opinion be the correct
way to prevent the problem I had.

I think packagesearch entered an endless loop after it failed to start
a terminal.
