My apologies up front if this turns out to be a package problem.

I have installed libtinyxml2-0.0.0& libtinyxml2-dev and now I see
them classified as Obsolete/local Extra packages, although that
shouldn't be the case.

apt-cache policy libtinyxml2-0.0.0
libtinyxml2-0.0.0:
   Installed: 0~git20120518.1.a2ae54e-1
   Candidate: 0~git20120518.1.a2ae54e-1
   Version table:
  *** 0~git20120518.1.a2ae54e-1 0
         500 http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ sid/main amd64 Packages
         100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Excerpt from /var/lib/dpkg/status (Section libs!):

Package: libtinyxml2-0.0.0

More info available upon request (I'm not sure what else to submit).

Is that in the available file too: «dpkg -p libtinyxml2-0.0.0»?

If it's not available, then that's the reason, and you just need to
update the list, with something like «dselect update».

regards,
guillem

It's not that trivial :), of course I did dselect update. This is what happens:

[~]# dselect update
Hit http://ftp.debian.org sid InRelease
Hit http://ftp.debian.org sid/main amd64 Packages
Hit http://ftp.debian.org sid/contrib amd64 Packages
Hit http://ftp.debian.org sid/non-free amd64 Packages
Reading package lists... Done
Merging available information
Replacing available packages info, using /var/cache/apt/available.
Information about 37953 packages was updated.

[~]# dpkg -p libtinyxml2-0.0.0
Package `libtinyxml2-0.0.0' is not available.
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents.
