I'm not disputing that showmount relies on rpc, and hence the /net
map as currently implemented requires it.  I don't use or enable the
/net map, so it doesn't concern me that it wouldn't work with my
server configuration.

Regression reports demoted to wishlist severity will not prevent
damaged behavior from entering stable where we'll have to cope with it
for years.  NFSv4 was a big step forward towards removing notoriously
insecure daemons from the network, it would be a real shame to see
that hard work go to waste becuase of a lousy automount
implementation.  It's bad enough that v4-only servers still have to
run portmap or rpcbind for local upcalls.
