I'm not disputing that showmount relies on rpc, and hence the /net map as currently implemented requires it. Regression reports demoted to wishlist severity will not prevent damaged behavior from entering stable where we'll have to cope with it for years. NFSv4 was a big step forward towards removing notoriously insecure daemons from the network, it would be a real shame to see that hard work go to waste becuase of a lousy automount implementation.
