Please accept my apologies for the large fles. I was concerned about this myself but as you asked for them I thought I should send them. I will compress any such in the future. I have already tried using a plain .xinitrc with only "exec i3" and I have also tried the default i3 configuration file. In any case, as I said previously, this does not seem to be a specifically i3 problem since it also happens with other wms if I kill the process from within X. Incidentally, I made a fresh installation of Debian on a space partition. That was fine, as expected; I upgraded to Testing and again no problem. But when I upgraded to Sid the crash came back, again with all the wms I tried if I killed the X process.
