Sorry, I forgot to come back on this when you answered. I'm afraid we need much more details. You can't login as root, you say. OK, I guess you're trying to open http://localhost:901 with a web browser, right? Then the browser prompts you for an account/password. Then you give the *Unix* password of the local root account of your machine, right? Can you login (at the console, for instance) on this machine with this root account? In short, isn't it disabled? If it isn't disabled, then what message do you get? Is there something in /var/log/syslog (this is where swat should log)? You can also try increasing the swat level log by modifying /etc/inetd.conf: swat stream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/swat -d3 (-d<n> can be increased up to 10, see swat(8) ) I would really appreciate getting these information because I can't reproduce any bug on my side.
