I just tried completely de-NVIDIA-ing my workstation and updating to this morning's Debian Unstable, removing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and running with nouveau (which is repouted to work fine on Fedora. This boots fine to the GDM3 login screen, however it refuses to login to GNOME Shell, starting GNOME2 instead. This comes up with no window manager but Metacity works fine once started. I have removed Compiz. In fact GNOME Shell works if started but it's performance is appalling -- completely unusable. I have no data about stability as I wasn't prepared to try using it for long enough.
I then installed the latest NVIDIA 295.49 from the NVIDIA installer and rebooted. This works for a while and then spontaneously terminates X which means GDM kicks in and shows a new login screen. In other words business as usual :-(( I have no idea if this is a kernel problem, an NVIDIA problem, or a mix of the two. All I can say is that I cannot afford to use the workstation because of the randomness of this failure. I am thinking maybe I just get a new graphics card that NVIDIA are more likely to be careful about supporting -- I am assuming that none of the recent changes to the driver contain any changes that affect my Quadro FX570. Anyone any suggestions? -- Russel. ============================================================================= Dr Russel Winder t: +44 20 7585 2200 voip: sip:russel.win...@ekiga.net 41 Buckmaster Road m: +44 7770 465 077 xmpp: rus...@winder.org.uk London SW11 1EN, UK w: www.russel.org.uk skype: russel_winder
