Ok, now that is curious. After downgrading to 295.20-1 the freezes are 
gone, but instead I now get random X-Server restarts.
So the system ends up at the KDE login screen. I will downgrade ones 
more to 295.09 to see whether this issue is gone then.
I'll keep you informed.
