Apparently, bash's line number count is confused by the <<EOF statements, so I have absolutely no idea what's going wrong.
Can you reproduce teh error by doing "dpkg --configure mantis"? If so, please try to add a "set -x" at the beginning of /var/lib/dpkg/info/mantis.postrm, do another "dpkg --configure mantis", and send me the (very verbose) output.
