WARNING : I am not a Debian Developper , just a geek. Make a backup of your previous update-alternatives before patching it. I know the patch to be safe and right as for as my knowledge of perl can help. But it may change the behaviour of other packages during install. The patach correct the error checks so you got real error messages in some cases which did not before. If so please CC me so i could merge the two bug reports.
